Wimbledon Society Literary Walk
SATURDAY OCT 4th
Following the sell-out success of last year’s walks, the Wimbledon Society are offering another
opportunity to take a guided walk to places where notable authors were born, lived or forged
important literary connections. The walk covers Wimbledon Village and the Common.

Walks at 2, 2.30pm.
Duration : 1 1⁄2 hours including tea/coffee break at Southside House

Writer and photographer Richard Surman  provides a fascinating illustrated insight into
some of the most intriguing churches through the British Isles. Every church harbours its
own stories and secrets, from the mysterious ruins of Finchcairn, overlooking Loch Awe, to the
extravagant Strawberry Hill Gothik of Herefordshire’s St John the Evangelist in Shobdon.
 
Richard Surman is the author of several successful books and contributes to
English, Spanish and Swedish magazines. He lives at Southside House,
and was a founder member and Artistic Director of the Ledbury Poetry Festival.

WHERE WAS HOMER'S ITHICA: ROBERT BIDDLESTONE     MONDAY OCT 6th
Since the publication of “Odysseus Unbound: The Search for Homer’s Ithaca” in 2005,
a major research project has been under way in Kefalonia to test the book’s radical solution to
this age-old mystery. Author Robert Bittlestone will describe the latest news from the island
with slides, film clips and satellite images.

QUEEN VICTORIA: first Royal Rebel? KATE WILLIAMS     TUESDAY OCT 7TH

makes a welcome return to Wimbledon Bookfest to tell the amazing story of Victoria's struggle
to become Queen, against a background of shocking scandal, sexual license, lies and terrible exploitation.
